Changing the name of the Christian Initiation process from RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) to OCIA (Order of…) might seem semantic. However, the word “Order” emphasizes that the process should be a continuous faith and spiritual formation as opposed to passing checkpoints and rites on the path to the initiation sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist). Catechumens and candidates shouldn’t be rushed to the next rite or phase in the process until they are ready. Even after completing the initiation process, the newly baptized continue the journey of discipleship throughout their lives.
The OCIA is not merely about catechism or instructions or the rites. It’s primary about encountering Jesus Christ, being opened to him, believing in him, being conformed to him and bearing witness to him.
